Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle has revealed that tactical demands and competition for places influenced Nick Woltemade's decision to join Juventus on a season-long loan.
The 24-year-old German striker, who arrived from Stuttgart for a club-record £64million last year, moved to Italy during the final days of the summer transfer window.
Despite rating Woltemade highly, Jaissle admitted that other Newcastle players were better suited to his high-pressing approach at the time.
Jaissle reveals conversation behind Woltemade exit
Woltemade initially impressed at St James' Park, scoring six goals from his first six shots on target.
However, his goalscoring form declined, and he struggled to establish a consistent role under former manager Eddie Howe.
The arrival of Jaissle offered the striker an opportunity to rebuild his Newcastle career, but he remained on the bench for the opening Premier League fixtures against Liverpool and Tottenham.
Speaking to German magazine Kicker, Jaissle explained the discussions that preceded Woltemade's departure.
"We communicated very clearly where he stood within the team at that moment, particularly considering the way we play football with high pressing," he said.
"At the time, one or two other players were simply a little ahead of him."
Jaissle nevertheless stressed that the striker remains part of Newcastle's long-term plans.
"But I rate him very highly, and of course he remains our player because he's only out on loan."
Juventus move offers Woltemade fresh opportunity
Woltemade's departure helped Newcastle complete the £51million signing of Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille.
Juventus are covering the German international's wages in full, although the agreement does not include an option or obligation to buy.
His start in Turin has been relatively quiet, with the striker yet to make his first Serie A start.
However, Woltemade scored a penalty during Juventus' 5-0 Europa League victory over NEC Nijmegen, offering an early reminder of his goalscoring ability.
