Liverpool are expected to officially confirm the signing of Ronald Araújo on Monday after the Barcelona defender completed his medical ahead of his move to Anfield.
The Uruguay international has already completed the remaining formalities of the transfer, with only the club's official announcement still pending.
Ronald Araújo completes Liverpool medical
According to Mundo Deportivo, Araújo travelled to England on Sunday morning alongside his family and representatives before arriving at Liverpool's training complex later that day.
The 27-year-old successfully completed his medical examinations and media commitments, leaving the Reds with only the official confirmation of the transfer to publish.
Liverpool have agreed to sign the centre-back on an initial loan deal that includes a €55 million option to buy next summer.
Why Araújo chose to leave Barcelona
Araújo's departure comes after he was unable to secure assurances over his role under Barcelona manager Hansi Flick.
The defender reportedly wanted to remain an important first-team player throughout the 2026/27 campaign. However, after failing to receive guarantees over regular starts, he decided to pursue a move to the Premier League.
Barcelona boss Flick publicly confirmed before the club's pre-season trip to Italy that the defender had informed the club of his desire to seek a new challenge.
Liverpool addressing defensive shortage
Araújo's arrival comes at an important time for Liverpool, who are currently short of options in central defence.
Manager Andoni Iraola is dealing with several injury concerns, with Giovanni Leoni and Joe Gomez unavailable, while Jérémy Jacquet has also suffered a recent setback.
Although Jacquet's injury is not expected to keep him out for an extended period, Liverpool have been keen to strengthen immediately before the start of the new season.
The addition of Araújo provides experience, physicality and depth at a time when defensive reinforcements have become a priority.
Deal structure
Liverpool have negotiated:
- Initial season-long loan.
- €55 million purchase option.
- Medical and media duties completed.
- Official announcement expected on Monday.
What happens next?
With every major formality now completed, Liverpool are expected to unveil Ronald Araújo as their latest summer signing.
His arrival should immediately strengthen Iraola's defensive options as the Reds prepare for the opening weeks of the Premier League campaign while several centre-backs continue their recovery from injury.
