Crystal Palace star Quinten Timber slammed as ‘worst Dutchman’ after Germany draw

Crystal Palace midfielder Quinten Timber has come under heavy criticism in the Netherlands following his performance in the 1-1 draw with Germany.

Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen singled out the 25-year-old following the game, describing Timber as the worst performer in the Netherlands side and questioning the effectiveness of the energy he brings to midfield.

It comes during a week in which Driessen has already been involved in a public disagreement with Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

Speaking on De Telegraaf's Kick-off podcast, Driessen was particularly unimpressed by Timber's display against Germany.

"Timber was definitely the worst Dutchman," Driessen said.

"He might bring energy, but it has to be the right kind of energy."

The criticism comes after Timber's move to Crystal Palace increased expectations around the midfielder and his role with the Netherlands.

However, Driessen's frustration was not limited to the Palace player.

He also criticised the overall speed of the Netherlands' possession and build-up play, arguing that the team had become too cautious.

"It's all so terribly slow," he said. "The build-up play, too – it's so sluggish, and that's simply a trait that clings to this team. They all play it safe."

Timber is the latest Netherlands international to find himself on the receiving end of Driessen's criticism.

The journalist previously targeted Van Dijk following the Netherlands' World Cup exit and suggested the national team's tactical approach had been altered to accommodate the Liverpool defender.

Van Dijk confronted Driessen over those comments during the current international break, leading to a tense exchange between the pair.

Whether Timber chooses to respond in similar fashion remains to be seen.

For now, the Crystal Palace midfielder will be more concerned with retaining his place in the Netherlands team and responding on the pitch after a performance that has attracted significant criticism back home.

Timber will now look to respond by maintaining his place in the Netherlands setup before returning to Crystal Palace.

The midfielder's performances at club level will also be important as he attempts to establish himself further in the national team and ensure criticism of his display against Germany does not become a wider debate over his position.
