Ollie Watkins says Aston Villa will be ready to make life difficult for Liverpool after their frustrating 2-2 draw away at Burnley.

Villa missed the chance to strengthen their push for Champions League qualification after being held at Turf Moor, despite twice battling back into the game.

Burnley, already relegated, proved difficult opponents once again, continuing a recent run of competitive performances against top sides.

For Villa, the dropped points could prove significant in the closing weeks of the Premier League season.

Watkins sees positives despite missed opportunity

Watkins gave Villa the lead in the second half after turning the game around following earlier goals from Ross Barkley and Jaidon Anthony.

But Burnley responded quickly through Zian Flemming, whose equaliser denied Unai Emery’s side a potentially decisive win.

Speaking after the match, Watkins admitted there was disappointment at surrendering the advantage but felt the point could still be important.

“It was a really tough game and you’ve seen in recent weeks that they have become stronger. Manchester City only won 1-0 here. It was a valuable point after going behind but it’s disappointing that we got in front and let it slip away.” — Sky Sports

Watkins’ comments reflect Villa’s balancing act at this stage of the season, with domestic and European commitments continuing to stretch the squad.

Liverpool next at Villa Park

Attention now turns to Liverpool, with Villa facing one of their biggest remaining fixtures in the race for a top-four finish.

Watkins believes Villa Park can once again become a difficult venue for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

“It’s a good point. If you can’t win then don’t lose. We’ve got Liverpool at Villa Park next and we always make it difficult for them.” — Sky Sports

Having followed Villa’s recent form closely, Emery’s side have shown resilience at home against elite opposition this season, and that could be decisive in the final weeks.

However, much will depend on recovery levels after a demanding European schedule.

Watkins also pointed to the physical toll of Villa’s recent continental success.

“We had an amazing result in Europe a few days ago and the amount of energy and effort you put into those game — you’re leaving it all on the pitch. To go again in 48 hours is tough.” — Sky Sports

Watkins keeps scoring in key moments

Watkins also reflected on his eventful afternoon after seeing one goal ruled out before later finding the net.

His finish that eventually stood continued his strong scoring form in the run-in.

“It was a long ball over the top and hit my shoulder — the ref said they were checking with VAR. I got one ruled out in the first half, which was a shame. I think I need to get smaller boots.” — Sky Sports

His sharpness in front of goal remains crucial as Villa continue their push for a Champions League place.

What’s next?

Villa now return to Villa Park for a high-stakes meeting with Liverpool, a match that could have major implications in the race for European qualification.

For Emery’s side, turning home performances into points will be vital. For Watkins, maintaining his scoring momentum could be the difference between securing a top-four finish and missing out.

Can Aston Villa take a huge step toward the Champions League by beating Liverpool?
