José Mourinho has dismissed reports linking him with a return to Real Madrid CF, insisting there has been no contact with club president Florentino Pérez or anyone inside the club’s hierarchy.

The Portuguese coach has been strongly linked with a return to the Santiago Bernabéu in recent days as pressure continues to build around Madrid’s managerial situation.

Reports in Spain and Portugal suggested Mourinho was already in direct talks with the club, but the current SL Benficaboss has now publicly denied that claim.

Mourinho shuts down Real Madrid speculation

Speaking ahead of Benfica’s final stretch of the domestic season, Mourinho made it clear his full focus remains on finishing the campaign before discussing his future.

“I honestly ran away, I had no contact whatsoever, neither with the President, nor with any of the important people in the structure.”

He also explained that avoiding transfer or managerial discussions late in the season is a deliberate career habit.

“It’s a decision similar to others I’ve made throughout my career. Especially now, in the final stages of the season, I don’t speak to anyone.”

Mourinho confirmed there will be a short period after Benfica’s final league match against Estoril where he will be free to assess his options.

That leaves the possibility of future talks open — but not yet.

Why Real Madrid are being linked with Mourinho again

Real Madrid’s difficult campaign has intensified speculation around the dugout.

For a second straight season, the Spanish giants are on course to finish without major silverware, while the possibility of seeing rivals FC Barcelona seal another La Liga title has only added to the pressure.

Their situation could worsen if they fail to win El Clásico this weekend.

Beyond results, wider issues have emerged behind the scenes.

Reports suggest dressing-room tensions have grown in recent weeks, with senior players including Federico Valverdeand Aurélien Tchouaméni involved in internal disciplinary matters.

That wider instability has increased speculation that Madrid could turn to a familiar figure to restore control.

Mourinho’s history at Madrid still matters

Mourinho remains one of the most significant modern coaches in Real Madrid’s recent history.

During his first spell between 2010 and 2013, he broke FC Barcelona’s domestic dominance and delivered a record-breaking La Liga title in 2011/12 with 100 points.

He also won the Copa del Rey and helped re-establish Madrid as a consistent Champions League semi-final side.

Having followed Madrid’s managerial cycles over the last decade, Mourinho’s profile still fits one key need: immediate authority.

However, it remains too early to draw firm conclusions.

Much will depend on whether Madrid formally move after the season ends — and whether Mourinho sees the project as the right next step.

What’s next?

Mourinho says there will be no discussions until Benfica’s final league game against Estoril, which creates a clear timeline for any potential movement.

For Real Madrid, the next major decision could depend on how the season finishes — particularly around El Clásico and the final La Liga standings.

If change comes, Mourinho’s name will remain one of the most closely watched.

Would Mourinho be the right choice for Real Madrid at this stage?
