Why Noah Okafor is facing fresh criticism in Switzerland after international decision

Noah Okafor’s decision to step away from the Switzerland national team while Murat Yakin remains manager has triggered another wave of criticism in his homeland, with a previously unreported incident involving his family now entering the debate.

The Leeds United forward announced last week that he would make himself unavailable for Switzerland as long as Yakin remains in charge.

It was the latest development in a difficult relationship between Okafor and the national-team coach, and the reaction in Switzerland has been far from sympathetic towards the 26-year-old.

Reports have already suggested Yakin was angered by the latest episode, while other commentary in Switzerland has questioned Okafor’s attitude towards his status within the national team.

Now the discussion has moved beyond football.

Swiss outlet Nau has published comments from hospitality businessman Michel Péclard concerning an incident involving Okafor’s family before the World Cup.

According to Péclard, Okafor and his family celebrated the Leeds forward’s 26th birthday at his Fischer’s Fritz establishment.

Péclard claims Okafor’s sister had initially asked to drop off decorations on the morning of the celebration but later wanted to decorate the table herself during a busy period.

He says staff explained that this was not possible because the reservation was not until 5pm, leading to what he described as a heated argument.

The situation allegedly escalated later that evening.

Péclard claims five members of Okafor’s entourage confronted his general manager after 10:30pm and questioned him about how the earlier situation had been handled.

Despite an apology from the manager, Péclard says the group remained unhappy.

He also alleged that Okafor’s sister later requested a reduction in the price of the celebration, something he personally rejected.

Péclard has now connected his experience with Okafor’s ongoing problems with Switzerland manager Yakin.

He described the alleged behaviour of the group as “completely unacceptable” and said the experience helped him understand why Yakin might not want to select the Leeds player.

That makes the timing of the story significant.

Okafor has only recently stepped away from international football and complained about the way he has been treated, meaning his relationship with the Swiss national-team setup is already under intense scrutiny.

The striker may have a different account of what happened at the restaurant, and the claims published by Nau represent Péclard’s version of events rather than Okafor’s.

For now, however, the fallout surrounding Okafor’s Switzerland decision appears to be growing rather than disappearing.

Okafor’s international future now appears tied directly to Yakin’s position as Switzerland manager. Unless either side changes course, the Leeds forward will remain unavailable for selection.

Attention will therefore return to his performances for Leeds United, while the increasingly public dispute in Switzerland could continue to produce further reaction.
