Lukáš Horníček reveals why he chose Newcastle after Real Madrid and Bayern links

Lukáš Horníček has revealed Newcastle United’s promise of becoming their number one goalkeeper convinced him to move to St James’ Park this summer.

Newcastle paid €30.6million to sign the 24-year-old from Braga as part of their major rebuild under Matthias Jaissle. Horníček has since made six appearances across all competitions, conceding nine goals and keeping two clean sheets.

The Czech goalkeeper has now opened up on his first months in England, including Newcastle’s support and reports linking him with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich before his transfer.

Speaking to Sport.cz, Horníček admitted Newcastle were actually one of the final clubs to enter the race for his signature.

Despite their late arrival, their plans quickly convinced him.

“Newcastle actually joined last, but they immediately outlined the project to me,” Horníček said. “They told me what they expected from me and promised the role of number one.”

The Magpies were also prepared to meet Braga’s demands without creating a lengthy negotiation.

“They acted very quickly, and there was no problem even with the money Braga wanted for me. I didn’t hesitate for a minute.”

Horníček confirmed he had several offers but played down reports that European giants Real Madrid and Bayern Munich had made concrete approaches.

“When I saw it on social media, I was surprised myself,” he said. “I had no idea about the interest of such clubs. It was more about speculation.”

The goalkeeper has also quickly developed an appreciation for the atmosphere at St James’ Park.

“We have the best fans in England,” Horníček said. “Whenever we get the ball, I feel like the stadium will explode. They’re breathing with the team. Incredible.”

Horníček has also been pleasantly surprised by how supporters treat Newcastle players away from the stadium, explaining that he has generally been given space when spending time around the city.

After 88 senior appearances for Braga, Newcastle represents the biggest step of his career so far. His comments suggest the clarity of Jaissle's project — particularly the promise of regular football — made the decision straightforward.

Horníček will look to build on his six appearances when Newcastle return to action after the international break.

With Jaissle overseeing a young and significantly rebuilt squad, establishing himself as Newcastle's long-term number one will now be the goalkeeper's priority.
