Nico Elvedi is closing in on a move to Leeds United after Borussia Mönchengladbach confirmed negotiations over the defender's departure are progressing.

The 29-year-old has already reached a verbal agreement with Leeds, while a fee of around €10million is expected to be enough to complete the transfer.

According to Bild, Elvedi is now on the verge of leaving Gladbach after 11 years with the Bundesliga club and could soon reunite with Leeds manager Daniel Farke.

A significant indication of the transfer's progress came when Elvedi was left out of Gladbach's squad for Sunday's 2-1 pre-season victory over Aston Villa.

His absence was linked to the advanced negotiations with Leeds.

Gladbach manager Eugen Polański has now confirmed that Elvedi wants to leave and admitted losing the Switzerland international will be difficult.

“He's a real rock for us, so this is a big loss,” Polański said.

However, the manager explained that Elvedi's wishes must also be respected after more than a decade of service to the German club.

“We can't and don't want to stand in his way,” he added.

Sporting director Rouven Schröder also confirmed that discussions surrounding the transfer are moving in the right direction.

“We're well on our way to Nico leaving, but nothing is finalised yet,” Schröder said.

That leaves the transfer short of completion, but both the player's desire to move and Gladbach's public comments suggest there are few significant obstacles remaining.

Elvedi joined Borussia Mönchengladbach from FC Zürich in 2015 and previously worked with Farke during the 2022/23 season.

His contract runs until 2027, and Gladbach are expected to receive approximately €10m from his sale.

The Bundesliga club are already preparing to reinvest that money in another centre-back, with Schröder confirming they will need a replacement if Elvedi completes his move to Elland Road.
