Newcastle United have reached a full agreement with SC Freiburg to sign Johan Manzambi in a deal worth €60 million.
The clubs have agreed the transfer package, leaving Newcastle to finalise the remaining details of their agreement with the midfielder. A long-term contract has already been prepared.
According to Florian Plettenberg Aston Villa were also in the race for Manzambi following the serious ACL injury suffered by Amadou Onana, but Newcastle have now emerged as the clear favourites to complete the signing.
Newcastle close in on Johan Manzambi transfer
The agreement with Freiburg represents the most significant step towards bringing Manzambi to St James’ Park.
With the €60 million package settled between the clubs, Newcastle are now working to complete the final contractual details with the player. Unless there is an unexpected late change, the deal appears to be moving towards completion.
Manzambi is currently injured, which adds another factor to the timing of the transfer. However, the midfielder remains fully focused on his World Cup commitments while Newcastle handle the remaining work behind the scenes.
The long-term contract prepared by the Premier League club underlines how highly they rate the 20-year-old and suggests he is viewed as an important part of their midfield plans rather than a short-term addition.
Aston Villa lose ground after Onana injury
Aston Villa had also been pushing for Manzambi after Onana suffered an ACL injury.
That setback created an obvious need for midfield reinforcement, but Newcastle have moved into a much stronger position by reaching a complete club-to-club agreement with Freiburg.
For Villa, the development could force them to consider alternative targets if Newcastle complete the final stages of the transfer as expected.
The €60 million fee also shows the level of investment required to secure Manzambi. Newcastle have moved decisively to get ahead of their Premier League rivals and are now close to adding one of Freiburg’s most highly rated young players.
What happens next?
Newcastle must now finalise the remaining personal terms and contractual details with Manzambi before the transfer can be completed.
His current injury and World Cup focus may influence the timing of the final steps, but the key agreement between Newcastle and Freiburg is already in place.
Do you think Manzambi is worth the €60 million investment for Newcastle?
