Coventry City are reportedly close to completing the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt defender Aurèle Amenda in a club-record deal worth up to €20 million.

According to BILD, an agreement including bonuses is already in place between the clubs. The only major step still outstanding is Amenda’s medical, which has been delayed because the 20-year-old remains with Switzerland at the World Cup.

The move would represent a major statement from newly promoted Coventry as Frank Lampard prepares his squad for the Premier League.

Coventry City agree record Aurèle Amenda transfer

Amenda is set to become the most expensive signing in Coventry’s history.

The current record belongs to Haji Wright, who joined for around €11 million in 2023. Amenda’s €20 million package would comfortably surpass that figure, although Coventry could still break the record again during an ambitious summer window.

Frankfurt are also set to make a significant profit on the centre-back. They signed him for €9.5 million in 2024 after his development through the Young Boys academy and first team.

Since moving to Germany, Amenda has made 42 appearances for Frankfurt. He featured 29 times in all competitions last season, including 24 Bundesliga appearances and five in the Champions League.

That experience is significant for Coventry. Despite being only 20, Amenda has already played in two major European leagues and gained Champions League exposure before a potential move to England.

World Cup delays Amenda medical

The transfer is now waiting on Switzerland’s World Cup campaign.

Amenda has not yet played at the tournament, remaining an unused substitute during the group stage and Switzerland’s knockout matches against Algeria and Colombia.

However, he remains part of the squad as Switzerland prepare to face Argentina in the quarter-finals. Until his international commitments are over, Coventry are reportedly unable to complete the medical required to finalise the transfer.

There is currently no suggestion that the delay has affected the agreement itself. The €20 million deal is in place, leaving Coventry to wait for Amenda to become available.

What happens next?

Coventry will continue to monitor Switzerland’s World Cup campaign before arranging Amenda’s medical.

Once that is completed, the defender should be able to finalise his move from Frankfurt and become the club’s record signing. For Lampard, it would add a young centre-back with Bundesliga and Champions League experience to a squad preparing for Premier League football.

Is Amenda the type of signing Coventry need to establish themselves in the Premier League?
