Napoli are reportedly preparing a January move for Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee, with sporting director Giovanni Manna hoping two former Old Trafford players can help convince the Dutchman to return to Italy.

The 25-year-old has struggled for opportunities under Michael Carrick, and Napoli believe they could offer him a route back to regular first-team football.

Napoli turn to Højlund and McTominay

According to Italian outlet Area Napoli, Manna has developed a strategy to bring Zirkzee to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

The plan reportedly involves Rasmus Højlund and Scott McTominay, who previously shared a dressing room with Zirkzee at Manchester United.

Napoli manager Massimiliano Allegri is understood to want another attacking option, with Lorenzo Lucca yet to fully convince as Højlund's deputy.

Zirkzee has reportedly indicated that he would welcome a return to Serie A, where he previously impressed for Bologna.

However, Area Napoli does not specify whether Napoli are considering a permanent deal or a loan.

Manchester United stance could complicate January exit

Zirkzee has played just 197 minutes across 14 appearances since Carrick took charge in January, including only 20 Premier League minutes this season.

His overall Manchester United record stands at nine goals and four assists in 79 appearances.

United reportedly want approximately €35million to sanction his departure in January.

Juventus previously explored a loan deal, but negotiations collapsed because United insisted on an obligation to buy.

The Turin club remain interested, although their current loan arrangement for Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade could complicate another attacking addition.

That situation may give Napoli an advantage if they decide to pursue Zirkzee when the transfer window opens.

Key Points

  • Napoli are reportedly targeting Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee for January.
  • Sporting director Giovanni Manna hopes Rasmus Højlund and Scott McTominay can help persuade the forward.
  • Zirkzee has played only 20 Premier League minutes this season under Michael Carrick.
  • Manchester United reportedly value the Netherlands international at €35million.
  • Juventus remain potential rivals, but their current attacking options could complicate a move.

What's Next?

Napoli must decide whether to pursue a loan or permanent transfer before opening formal negotiations with Manchester United. Any January agreement is likely to depend on whether the Italian club can meet United's financial demands.
