Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has again challenged summer signing Mateus Fernandes to improve, despite describing the midfielder as one of the best players in his squad.
The Italian's latest comments follow his criticism of Fernandes after Tottenham's 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa, which left Spurs bottom of the Premier League with just two points.
With a difficult trip to Manchester United approaching, De Zerbi insists the midfielder has his full backing but must become stronger.
De Zerbi revisits Aston Villa criticism
Fernandes was substituted at half-time against Villa, with Mohammed Kudus replacing him as Tottenham attempted to turn the match around.
The decision failed to produce the desired response, with Spurs losing control in midfield and eventually suffering another defeat.
Afterwards, De Zerbi admitted he had been disappointed by the Portuguese midfielder's performance.
“I have a big confidence in Mateus, but I didn’t like the performance of Mateus today,” he said.
The Tottenham manager stressed that his criticism was not personal, adding that he expected more because of Fernandes' ability.
The comments raised questions about how quickly the summer signing could adapt to De Zerbi's demands.
Fernandes backed ahead of Manchester United trip
Speaking before Saturday's visit to Old Trafford, De Zerbi attempted to clarify his position while maintaining that Fernandes still has areas to improve.
“He’s a great player, he’s one of the best in our team and he needs time to understand the club and come inside the environment of Spurs.”
The manager added: “I have confidence in him. He doesn’t start the game bad or worse than others but he has to be stronger. He needs time and that’s what we’ll give him.”
Tottenham face a Manchester United side also under pressure, with Michael Carrick's team winless in their last three Premier League matches.
For De Zerbi, the immediate priority is securing Tottenham's first league victory of the season while helping Fernandes settle into his new surroundings.
