Michael Owen believes Michael Carrick deserves more time as Manchester United manager despite mounting pressure following a disappointing start to the Premier League season.
United have won just one of their opening six league matches, but Owen insists Carrick's achievements last season should not be forgotten ahead of a demanding run of away fixtures.
Owen defends Carrick amid Manchester United struggles
Carrick returned to Old Trafford in January following Ruben Amorim's departure and guided United to third place and Champions League qualification.
His success earned him a permanent two-year contract in May, but results have deteriorated this season.
United have collected six points from 18 in the Premier League and failed to keep a league clean sheet.
Saturday's 1-1 draw against ten-man Tottenham increased scrutiny of Carrick's position.
However, speaking to GOAL, Owen defended the former United midfielder.
“I'm a big Carrick fan. I thought he should have been given the job,” Owen said.
He also argued that United had been unfortunate in matches against Everton and Manchester City.
“There's people trying to put pressure, but I do think he deserves a fair bit more time for what he's done so far.”
Difficult away fixtures could test Carrick's future
United now face a challenging schedule, with four of their next five matches taking place away from Old Trafford.
Their upcoming opponents include Atlético Madrid in the Champions League, Leeds United at Elland Road and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Owen believes the Leeds fixture will be particularly difficult because of the rivalry between the clubs and the atmosphere at Elland Road.
He acknowledged United's performance against Tottenham was disappointing but maintained that Carrick has a stronger squad than his recent predecessors.
The former England striker believes the team still has the potential to produce a respectable season.
Nevertheless, United's results will need to improve if Carrick is to ease growing speculation about his future.
