Sunderland have received fresh encouragement in their pursuit of Igor Paixão after the Marseille winger revealed he expects to have a better chance of leaving the French club next summer.

The Brazilian was a major target for Régis Le Bris during the last transfer window, but Marseille blocked his departure despite receiving improved offers from the Black Cats.

Paixão explains why Sunderland move collapsed

Paixão joined Marseille from Feyenoord in 2025 and impressed during his debut season, registering 12 goals and seven assists.

His performances attracted Sunderland, who reportedly came close to completing a €30million transfer before Marseille intervened.

Club president Stéphane Richard subsequently explained that he had opposed the sale because losing such an important player would have weakened Marseille's sporting project.

Speaking to Canal+ before Marseille's 2-0 victory over Troyes, Paixão acknowledged that the club's circumstances influenced his decision to remain.

He explained that Marseille would have struggled to replace him, making staying the more appropriate decision at the time.

Premier League dream keeps Sunderland interested

The 26-year-old has already spoken publicly about his ambition to play in the Premier League.

Although he remains under contract with Marseille until 2030, his latest comments suggest a transfer could become possible in 2027.

Asked about the January window, Paixão admitted that mid-season moves can be complicated because clubs have already assembled their squads.

He indicated that a departure next summer was more likely.

Those comments could encourage Sunderland to revisit their interest, particularly after coming so close to signing him earlier this year.

However, there is currently no indication that the Black Cats have submitted a fresh offer or reopened negotiations.

Any potential deal would also depend on Marseille's willingness to sell and whether Paixão continues attracting Premier League interest.

Key Points

  • Sunderland reportedly came close to signing Igor Paixão for €30million last summer.
  • Marseille president Stéphane Richard intervened to prevent the winger's departure.
  • Paixão has confirmed his ambition to play in the Premier League.
  • The Brazilian believes a summer 2027 transfer is more likely than a January move.

What's Next?

Paixão is expected to remain focused on Marseille for the rest of the season while keeping his future options open. Sunderland may have another opportunity to pursue the winger next summer if Marseille become willing to negotiate.
