Manchester United and Chelsea have been warned that signing Maxi Araújo from Sporting will be both difficult and expensive this summer.

The Uruguay international has attracted interest from the Premier League after his performances for club and country, but agent Martín Rodríguez Nader insists Sporting remain in complete control of his future.

Araújo is under contract until 2029 and has an €80 million release clause, leaving the Portuguese club under no pressure to negotiate.

Man Utd and Chelsea face Maxi Araújo transfer battle

Speaking to El Espectador Deportes, Rodríguez Nader made clear that only Europe’s wealthiest clubs are realistically capable of signing the 26-year-old.

“When a player stands out at Sporting, it’s not easy to take him away from there. Sporting have a lot of money and they don’t sell cheaply.” — Martín Rodríguez Nader

The agent added that only “20 or 30 clubs in the world” could afford Araújo, including leading Premier League sides and a small number of elite clubs elsewhere in Europe.

Portuguese newspaper Record continues to identify Manchester United and Chelsea among the interested teams. United have reportedly monitored Araújo closely, with a club representative watching him during Uruguay’s World Cup campaign.

The winger scored twice and provided one assist at the tournament, increasing his profile despite Uruguay’s group-stage elimination.

Sporting’s position remains strong. Araújo is one of their key players, has three years remaining on his contract and is protected by a significant release clause.
