Aston Villa are reportedly the club closest to reaching an agreement for AS Roma attacker Matías Soulé as the Italian side increasingly consider a summer sale.

The Argentine winger only joined Roma from Juventus in 2024 after an impressive spell at Frosinone, but his long-term future in the Italian capital is already under growing doubt.

While flashes of quality remained visible throughout the campaign, injuries and inconsistent form prevented Soulé from fully establishing himself as one of Roma’s central attacking figures.

Now Aston Villa appear to be pushing hardest for his signature.

Aston Villa believed to have concrete offer ready

According to reports in Italy, Aston Villa are currently the closest club to completing a deal for the 22-year-old.

Roma are reportedly demanding somewhere between €35m and €40m for the winger, although the precise structure of Villa’s proposal remains unclear at this stage.

Roma’s willingness to negotiate appears heavily connected to Financial Fair Play pressures and the club’s broader transfer strategy under Gian Piero Gasperini.

It is easy to understand why Roma may now seek a more physically dominant or direct wide option.

Mason Greenwood pursuit influencing decision

Reports suggest Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini sees Mason Greenwood as a major attacking target this summer.

Selling Soulé would reportedly help generate the finances required to pursue the Marseille forward while simultaneously creating valuable capital gains before the end of June.

Crucially for Roma, anything above €20m would already represent a positive financial return on the player.

That context explains why the club now appear increasingly open to serious negotiations.

Aston Villa relationship with Roma could help

An important factor in the background is the growing relationship between Aston Villa and Roma over the last year.

The clubs have already worked successfully together in recent transfer dealings, particularly involving Donyell Malen, who became one of Roma’s most impactful recent signings.

That existing connection could help facilitate smoother negotiations again this summer.

However, Aston Villa may still attempt to lower Roma’s demands slightly.

Soulé suffered a significant muscle injury earlier this year and his inconsistent availability could encourage Villa to negotiate closer to the lower end of Roma’s valuation.

Unai Emery may view Soulé as long-term attacking project

From Aston Villa’s perspective, Soulé’s profile fits several characteristics Unai Emery tends to value in young attackers.

The Argentine is technically sharp, capable of operating across multiple attacking roles and still possesses considerable developmental upside despite an uneven season.

Villa also continue searching for greater creativity and flexibility in wide areas ahead of another European campaign.

At the right price, Soulé could become an attractive medium-term investment.
