Tottenham may have secured the financial stability needed to keep João Palhinha permanently after surviving relegation, but reports from Portugal suggest the midfielder is increasingly determined to leave north London.

The Portugal international played a major role in Spurs’ survival campaign under Roberto De Zerbi and became one of the side’s most influential players throughout the season.

However, despite Tottenham’s improved financial position, Sporting CP reportedly believe Palhinha’s desire to return to Lisbon is becoming impossible to ignore.

João Palhinha willing to slash salary

According to reports in Portugal, Palhinha is now prepared to reduce his wages “to the limit” in order to force through a move back to Sporting.

The midfielder currently earns around €9m gross per season — figures completely outside the financial reality of Portuguese football.

Even so, the player reportedly understands that reality and is now prioritising personal motivations over salary.

Reports suggest family considerations and emotional attachment to Sporting are heavily influencing the midfielder’s thinking.

His connection to the Lisbon club always remained unusually strong. Unlike many transfer sagas driven primarily by finances, this situation increasingly appears emotional and personal.

Bayern Munich now central to negotiations

Interestingly, Bayern Munich are reportedly viewed as the biggest obstacle to any deal.

The German side still hold contractual control over Palhinha until 2028 and Sporting now need Bayern to either lower their financial demands or agree to a more flexible structure.

At this stage, a loan with an option to buy is reportedly considered the most realistic formula.

Negotiations are already underway and Sporting are pushing to accelerate talks during the early stages of the transfer window.

Tottenham facing growing uncertainty

From Tottenham’s perspective, the situation is becoming increasingly uncomfortable.

Roberto De Zerbi reportedly wants Palhinha to remain central to his midfield plans after the player delivered seven goals and two assists across 45 appearances during the campaign.

However, the growing signs from Portugal suggest the midfielder is now actively trying to make the return happen.

Reports earlier this week even claimed Palhinha was spotted in Lisbon alongside several well-known Sporting figures including Francisco Trincão, Ruben Amorim and Franco Israel.

That only strengthened the feeling inside Portugal that preparations are quietly intensifying behind the scenes.

However, it remains too early to know whether Bayern Munich or Tottenham will ultimately soften their positions enough to make the deal financially possible.
