Schalke have reportedly emerged as serious contenders to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Saša Kalajdžić this summer.

After Wolves’ relegation to the Championship, uncertainty continues surrounding several senior players at Molineux — and Kalajdžić increasingly appears among the most likely departures.

The Austria international spent last season on loan at LASK and now faces another major decision about his future.

Schalke manager reportedly pushing for deal

According to reports in Austria, Kalajdžić has become a “hot topic” internally at Schalke following the club’s return to the Bundesliga.

Manager Miron Muslić is reportedly keen on bringing the Wolves forward to Germany as Schalke prepare for life back in the top flight.

The situation may also depend on veteran striker Edin Džeko, whose current contract is approaching expiry.

Kalajdžić recently said goodbye to LASK and is expected to report back to Wolves during the summer, although his long-term future remains highly uncertain.

Injury problems changed Wolves career

Having followed Kalajdžić’s time at Wolves since his arrival from Stuttgart in 2022, it is difficult to escape the feeling that injuries completely derailed what initially looked like a promising signing.

The striker suffered a serious injury on his debut for Wolves and endured another lengthy setback in 2024 which kept him sidelined for well over a year.

Those repeated absences prevented him from ever establishing real momentum in England.

Even so, flashes of his qualities remained visible during his loan spell in Austria last season.

Wolves may now need permanent sale

Reports from Austria also mention that people close to the player are encouraging structural changes around his career management after the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Wolves themselves may now view a permanent sale as the most practical outcome.

The striker still has a contract running until 2027, but relegation to the Championship changes the financial dynamics considerably.

Selling Kalajdžić this summer would allow Wolves to avoid the risk of his value dropping further heading into the final stages of his contract.

From Schalke’s perspective, the deal could represent a relatively low-risk opportunity to add Bundesliga experience and physical presence to their promoted squad.

Return to Germany could suit all parties

A move back to Germany increasingly feels logical for everyone involved.

Kalajdžić previously enjoyed some of the best football of his career in the Bundesliga with Stuttgart and may benefit from returning to a more familiar environment after several difficult years physically.

Schalke, meanwhile, appear eager to strengthen quickly after promotion and Muslić reportedly views the striker as a strong tactical fit.

However, it remains unclear whether Wolves would prefer a permanent transfer or another loan arrangement at this stage.
