Chelsea signing Marco Palestra backed as ‘unstoppable’ talent

Chelsea's imminent signing of Marco Palestra has received glowing praise in Italy, with former Italy international Giancarlo Antognoni insisting the young wing-back possesses the qualities to thrive in the Premier League.

The 21-year-old is on the verge of completing his move to Stamford Bridge after Chelsea won the race for one of Italian football's brightest emerging talents.

While some critics initially questioned his decision to leave Serie A, the mood in Italy has shifted, with many now viewing the transfer as a huge opportunity for the versatile defender.

Speaking to Tuttomercatoweb, former Italy midfielder Giancarlo Antognoni described Palestra as one of the country's most exciting young players.

Having worked closely with Italy's Under-21 setup, Antognoni believes Chelsea have signed a footballer capable of making an immediate impact.

"Palestra is a 21-year-old with strength, technique and speed. You can't stop him on the pitch, you can't get him."

The former Fiorentina legend also admitted Chelsea's financial package would have been extremely difficult to reject.

"The investment Chelsea made is significant."

"I thought he would stay in Italy. In England, the league is perhaps more difficult than here, but those offers are hard to turn down."

Inter Milan had initially appeared favourites to land Palestra after opening negotiations with Atalanta earlier in the transfer window.

However, Chelsea entered the race at the right moment and quickly moved ahead with a substantially stronger financial proposal.

That ultimately convinced both Atalanta and the player to choose a move to Stamford Bridge instead of remaining in Serie A.

Although some sections of the Italian media initially suggested Palestra had prioritised money over sporting ambition, that criticism has gradually faded as excitement over the transfer has grown.

From a tactical perspective, the move appears well suited to Chelsea's new head coach.

Having followed Xabi Alonso's work at Bayer Leverkusen, his system relies heavily on energetic wing-backs capable of contributing in both defence and attack. Players such as Jeremie Frimpong and Alejandro Grimaldo flourished under the Spaniard, making Palestra's athleticism and versatility an obvious fit. While adapting to the Premier League will present a significant challenge after just one full season in Serie A, Chelsea clearly believe his long-term potential justifies their investment.

The Italian is comfortable playing on either flank and can also operate further forward when required, offering Alonso valuable tactical flexibility.

Chelsea are expected to complete the formalities of Palestra's transfer shortly before integrating him into Xabi Alonso's pre-season plans. The Italian youngster will now have the opportunity to prove he can make the step from Serie A to one of the Premier League's most demanding environments.
