Liverpool are reportedly considering a move for Mainz midfielder Kaishū Sano after the Japan international enhanced his growing reputation with a series of impressive performances at the World Cup.
The 25-year-old has enjoyed an excellent first two seasons in the Bundesliga and is now attracting attention from several of Europe's biggest clubs, with Liverpool among those monitoring his situation.
Reports from Japan suggest the Reds could be preparing a significant offer later in the transfer window.
Liverpool monitoring Kaishū Sano
According to Nikkan Sports, Liverpool have identified Sano as a potential midfield addition following his strong displays for both Mainz and Japan.
The midfielder featured in all three of Japan's World Cup matches, registering an assist in the 4-0 victory over Tunisia before scoring in the narrow defeat to Brazil that ended his country's tournament.
Those performances have only strengthened interest from across Europe.
The report claims Liverpool could submit a major offer, although no transfer fee has yet been mentioned.
German reports earlier this year suggested Mainz value the midfielder at around €50 million.
Premier League clubs keeping close watch
Liverpool are not the only club following Sano's progress.
Arsenal, Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund have also been credited with interest, while previous reports linked Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford with the defensive midfielder.
Mainz remain in a strong negotiating position, however.
Sano is under contract until 2028, meaning the Bundesliga club are under little pressure to negotiate unless their valuation is met.
Why Sano appeals to Liverpool
Sano has developed into one of the Bundesliga's most reliable defensive midfielders since arriving from Kashima Antlers in 2024.
His physicality, positional discipline and ability to recover possession have earned widespread praise in both Germany and Japan.
Adding another specialist defensive midfielder would make tactical sense. Ryan Gravenberch has become the first-choice option in the holding role, but injuries to Wataru Endō have highlighted the need for greater depth. Sano's defensive qualities and athleticism could provide genuine competition while also allowing Liverpool to better manage workloads across multiple competitions.
A move to Anfield would also see Sano link up with fellow Japan international Wataru Endō.
