Lucas Bergvall has admitted his priority is playing regular football in his preferred midfield position after addressing speculation surrounding his Tottenham Hotspur future.
The Swedish midfielder has been linked with a move away from Spurs throughout the summer, but recent reports suggest head coach Roberto De Zerbi has made it clear the club do not intend to sell the 20-year-old.
Now, following Sweden's World Cup exit, Bergvall has spoken publicly about his ambitions ahead of the new season.
Bergvall outlines Tottenham priority
Speaking to Aftonbladet after Sweden's elimination against France, Bergvall reflected on both the defeat and his own performances at the tournament.
The youngster became Sweden's youngest-ever World Cup player earlier in the competition and believes there were positives despite the disappointing result.
"It's difficult to say straight afterwards. You have mixed feelings."
He added: "It felt like both I and the team were switched on from the start. We were in control and created some chances."
Ultimately, however, Bergvall accepted France deserved to progress.
"But France were the better team and deserved to go through."
Midfielder sends clear message over his future
Attention quickly turned to his club future amid ongoing transfer speculation.
Rather than confirming he wants to stay or leave Tottenham, Bergvall focused on one clear objective.
"I want continuous matches in my position. That is the only goal. We'll see what happens in the future."
The midfielder also stressed that his full attention had been on Sweden's World Cup campaign.
"I've only been focused on the World Cup until now."
When asked directly whether he still wanted to remain in the Premier League, Bergvall again refused to commit.
"As I said, my focus has been on the World Cup. We'll deal with whatever comes next. I don't know – we'll see."
His comments suggest regular playing time matters more than the club itself.
Tottenham facing selection dilemma
Bergvall's remarks arrive at an interesting time for Tottenham.
Reports this week claimed Roberto De Zerbi personally informed the midfielder he remains part of the club's long-term plans despite growing transfer speculation.
However, Spurs are also expected to strengthen their midfield after reportedly agreeing a deal for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
Bergvall's situation appears more nuanced than simply staying or leaving. The club clearly values one of its brightest young midfielders, but the player's comments underline that he expects meaningful opportunities rather than another developmental season. If competition for places continues to increase, Tottenham may eventually need to demonstrate that regular minutes will genuinely be available.
Bergvall made 33 appearances in all competitions during the 2025/26 campaign, contributing one goal and four assists.
