Manchester United’s momentum under Michael Carrick shows no sign of slowing after a statement week that reshaped the Premier League picture.

Back-to-back victories over Manchester City and Arsenal have lifted United into fourth place, with Carrick’s side suddenly looking composed, ruthless and confident again. Attention now turns to Fulham’s visit to Old Trafford, as United look to make it three wins on the bounce and strengthen their grip on the Champions League places.

The only blemish on Sunday’s famous win at the Emirates came late on, when Patrick Dorgu was forced off with an injury scare. There was also fresh discussion around the returns of Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee, both of whom remain sidelined.

Here is the latest on United’s injury situation.

Patrick Dorgu

Dorgu was one of United’s standout performers against Arsenal, scoring and causing constant problems down the left before pulling up late on while chasing a long ball.

The Dane was seen holding his right hamstring before receiving treatment and being replaced, sparking immediate concern given his recent form. Carrick, however, was quick to ease fears in his post-match comments.

The United boss suggested the issue was likely cramp rather than a muscle injury, though he admitted it was too early to be definitive. The hope inside the club is that Dorgu’s withdrawal was precautionary rather than serious.

Potential return: Fulham (H), February 1

Matthijs de Ligt

De Ligt’s absence has quietly stretched into a significant spell on the sidelines. The Dutch defender has not featured since late November, missing 11 matches across all competitions with a lower back issue.

Carrick revealed ahead of the Arsenal game that De Ligt’s recovery had been slower than anticipated, though not due to a major setback. United remain hopeful he will rejoin full training soon, with a return pencilled in for February if progress continues.

Potential return: February 2026

Joshua Zirkzee

Zirkzee has also been unavailable for Carrick’s opening two matches after suffering a muscular problem. The striker has been ruled out of recent squads but is expected to return around the same time as De Ligt.

With United finding goals from across the pitch, Carrick has not rushed Zirkzee back, preferring to ensure he is fully fit before reintegration.

Potential return: February 2026
