Manchester United have reportedly made an enquiry about Aston Villa left-back Ian Maatsen as Michael Carrick continues searching for defensive reinforcement before the transfer deadline.

According to Football Insider, United have identified the 24-year-old Netherlands international as a potential option after encountering difficulties with their other left-back targets.

Maatsen is under contract at Villa Park until 2030, meaning Aston Villa would be in a strong negotiating position if Manchester United decide to turn their initial enquiry into a formal approach.

Man Utd make Maatsen enquiry

Left-back has been an area United have been attempting to strengthen throughout the summer.

Their search has now led them to Maatsen, with the Red Devils reportedly contacting Villa to gather information about his situation.

The Dutchman is currently positioned to receive considerably more playing time under Unai Emery following Lucas Digne's summer move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite that opportunity, Maatsen's departure has not been completely ruled out. The Athletic previously identified him as one of the players who could potentially leave Villa during the summer window.

Whether Villa are now prepared to entertain an offer remains unclear.

Lewis Hall move ruled out by Newcastle

United's interest in Maatsen also comes after difficulties pursuing one of their preferred options.

Newcastle United's Lewis Hall has been high on United's left-back shortlist, but the Magpies are refusing to sell.

Newcastle have already sanctioned several major departures during their summer rebuild and have no intention of allowing Hall to become another.

That stance has forced United to assess alternatives, with Maatsen now emerging as one of the players under consideration.

Given his contract situation, however, convincing Villa to sell could also prove expensive.

Maatsen established at Aston Villa

Maatsen joined Chelsea in 2018 and made his senior debut the following year before gaining experience through several loan spells.

He represented Coventry City and Burnley before an impressive period with Borussia Dortmund, eventually leaving Chelsea permanently for Aston Villa in 2024.

The defender has since made 91 appearances for Villa, scoring three goals and providing four assists.

His ability to contribute going forward while providing natural width from left-back could make him an attractive option for Carrick as United attempt to strengthen that side of their defence.

For now, though, United's interest remains at the enquiry stage rather than an advanced negotiation.

Key Points

  • Manchester United have reportedly enquired about Aston Villa left-back Ian Maatsen.
  • Michael Carrick's side have been searching for a new left-back throughout the summer.
  • Maatsen could receive more opportunities at Villa following Lucas Digne's move to PSG.
  • Lewis Hall had been a preferred United target, but Newcastle are refusing to sell.
  • Maatsen is contracted to Aston Villa until 2030, potentially making any late transfer expensive.

What’s Next?

United must decide whether to turn their enquiry into a concrete offer and test Aston Villa's willingness to negotiate.

With Newcastle closing the door on Hall, Maatsen represents another possible solution to Carrick's left-back search. His long-term Villa contract means United are unlikely to find him an easy or inexpensive player to sign before the deadline.
