Manchester United could face a significant recruitment departure, with scouting chief Christopher Vivell reportedly among the candidates to replace Nils Schmadtke at Bayern Munich.
The German champions confirmed on Monday that Schmadtke will leave on 31 January 2027 after agreeing an early termination of his contract.
However, Bayern are also considering an internal solution, with chief scout Christoph Kresse reportedly set to take charge temporarily.
Bayern Munich consider Vivell appointment
According to German newspaper BILD, Vivell has emerged as a potential successor following Schmadtke's departure.
The outgoing scouting director joined Bayern in October 2024 but reportedly faced internal criticism earlier this year, despite receiving a contract extension.
Bayern sporting executive Max Eberl nevertheless praised Schmadtke's contribution to recruitment and squad planning.
Vivell is an attractive candidate because of his relationship with Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund.
The pair previously worked together at Red Bull Salzburg and are understood to maintain a strong professional relationship.
Vivell also developed a reputation for identifying emerging talent, having been involved in the recruitment of Erling Haaland, Dominik Szoboszlai and Benjamin Šeško.
However, Sky Sport Deutschland reports that Christoph Kresse is expected to assume Schmadtke's responsibilities initially, leaving the long-term appointment unresolved.
Manchester United could face recruitment disruption
Vivell joined Manchester United in 2024 and has become an important figure within the club's scouting and recruitment operation.
His contract reportedly runs until summer 2027, potentially complicating any attempt by Bayern to appoint him earlier.
A departure would require United to reconsider part of their recruitment structure at a time when questions remain over manager Michael Carrick's future.
Vivell has also been linked in reports with support for Julian Nagelsmann as a potential managerial candidate.
However, there is no confirmation that his future is connected to any decision regarding United's coaching position.
Bayern interest remains preliminary
Bayern are assessing their options following Schmadtke's exit, but Vivell's appointment is far from certain.
There is no confirmed formal approach to Manchester United or agreement with the executive.
The possibility of Kresse taking charge also means Bayern may not need to make an immediate external appointment.
