Lucas Perri admits Torino debut mistake as Leeds United loanee focuses on fresh start

Lucas Perri has admitted he should have done better for Fiorentina's goal on his Torino debut, but the Leeds United loanee is determined to quickly establish himself in Italy.

The 28-year-old made his first Serie A appearance at the weekend as Torino secured an important 2-1 away victory over Fiorentina.

It was ultimately a winning start for Perri, although his individual performance included one costly mistake.

Perri started brightly and produced an impressive early save, but was at fault when Mateo Pellegrino found the net during the second half.

Pellegrino struck from outside the penalty area and his effort slipped underneath the Brazilian goalkeeper's arms.

Fortunately for Perri, Torino recovered and scored twice late in the contest to secure all three points.

The goalkeeper did not attempt to hide from his error afterwards.

"I'm happy with my Serie A debut," Perri said. "We knew how difficult it would be, even in this heat. And then against Fiorentina, who are a great team.

"I could have done better on Pellegrino's shot, but I was mentally engaged the whole time, and it was a great debut.

"My teammates were there for me. I'm proud of them."

That response could be particularly encouraging for Torino. Rather than allowing the mistake to affect the remainder of his performance, Perri maintained his concentration and finished his first appearance with a victory.

Perri's adaptation is not limited to what happens on the pitch.

The Brazilian is still establishing his new life in Turin after leaving Leeds on loan, with both he and his family currently staying in a hotel while searching for a permanent home.

He is also determined to learn Italian as quickly as possible.

"I'm really happy in Turin," he explained. "My family is still in a hotel like me, but we're looking for a place to live.

"I'll learn Italian as soon as possible to better integrate into this new environment."

That desire to settle quickly could prove important after a difficult period at Leeds.

Perri featured regularly during the first half of last season before eventually falling out of favour under Daniel Farke. His move to Torino therefore provides an opportunity to rebuild momentum through regular football.

Torino's determination to sign Perri during the summer suggests he will be given every opportunity to establish himself as their first-choice goalkeeper.

Ignazio Abate has several younger goalkeepers available, meaning the 28-year-old can also provide experience and leadership within the squad.

Torino maintained their interest despite difficulties surrounding the transfer, demonstrating how highly they valued the opportunity to bring him to Serie A.

His opening appearance was imperfect, but an away victory provides a positive foundation.

For Perri, the challenge now is to eliminate the mistakes while adapting to Italian football, learning the language and establishing himself within his new surroundings.

Perri now has an opportunity to make the Torino number-one position his own. His debut error will be something he wants to correct quickly, but retaining his composure and finishing the match with a victory gives him a useful platform.

Successful adaptation could also benefit Leeds. If Perri establishes himself as a reliable Serie A goalkeeper during his loan spell, it would strengthen the prospects of his departure from Elland Road eventually becoming permanent.
