Former Aston Villa defender Lucas Digne is struggling to establish himself at Paris Saint-Germain just two months after returning to the French champions.
The 33-year-old joined PSG in August, ending a four-and-a-half-year spell at Villa Park, but has found regular opportunities difficult to secure under Luis Enrique.
According to French newspaper L'Équipe, concerns are growing over Digne's position in the squad, particularly after the manager opted for alternative solutions at left-back.
Luis Enrique overlooks Digne against Lyon
Digne's situation came under further scrutiny during PSG's 2–0 Ligue 1 victory over Lyon on Monday.
Despite first-choice left-back Nuno Mendes being unavailable, Enrique selected midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery in defence.
Digne remained on the bench throughout the match, while Lucas Hernández replaced Zaïre-Emery in the 65th minute.
The decision highlighted the competition facing the former Everton defender, who has made only five appearances across PSG's domestic and European fixtures this season.
His limited involvement is particularly notable given that PSG recruited him to provide experienced cover for Mendes.
Digne previously worked with Enrique at Barcelona, but that connection has yet to translate into regular starts in Paris.
Difficult start after Aston Villa departure
Digne returned to PSG on 9 August, signing a three-year contract until June 2029.
The transfer followed a successful spell at Aston Villa, where he became an important member of Unai Emery's squad.
He made 44 appearances during his final season at Villa Park and helped the club win the Europa League before representing France at the 2026 World Cup.
His return to Paris was intended to strengthen Enrique's defensive options, although reports have suggested the club initially considered signing a younger left-back.
However, Digne has struggled to establish himself ahead of Mendes, Hernández and other players capable of covering the position.
Digne determined to earn more opportunities
Despite the difficult start, L'Équipe reports that Digne has settled well into the dressing room and remains committed to improving his situation.
The experienced defender has reportedly undertaken additional physical preparation as he attempts to convince Enrique he deserves more minutes.
His opportunities could depend on PSG's demanding fixture schedule, although Mendes' eventual return will increase competition further.
For now, Digne faces the challenge of proving his value to a manager who has shown a willingness to use midfielders in defensive roles.

What's Next?

However, competition from Mendes, Hernández and Enrique's alternative tactical options means regular playing time is far from guaranteed.
