Former Ecuador coach blames Kendry Páez camp for Chelsea struggles

Chelsea youngster Kendry Páez has been criticised over the management of his development, with former Ecuador coach Jorge Célico believing the midfielder has not received the right advice during the early stages of his career.

Páez arrived at Chelsea with an enormous reputation after the Blues agreed a deal with Independiente del Valle in 2023. However, the Ecuador international is yet to make a senior appearance for the Premier League club.

Instead, a series of disappointing loan spells and off-field controversies have stalled the progress of a player once regarded as one of South America’s outstanding prospects.

Chelsea initially sent Páez to Strasbourg in July 2025, but he scored just once in 21 appearances before his loan was terminated in January.

The Blues then moved him to River Plate, where the 19-year-old registered one goal and one assist in 14 matches.

That spell also ended prematurely after Páez became involved in controversy surrounding social media posts which were interpreted as mocking River. The player subsequently denied that accusation.

With River terminating his loan, Páez returned to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea were unable to find another temporary destination during the summer transfer window, leaving him with the club’s U21 squad under the wider management of Xabi Alonso’s setup.

Jorge Célico, who worked extensively within Ecuador’s youth and senior international structure, believes the problem is not Páez’s natural ability.

Instead, he questioned the decisions made around the youngster’s development.

“In my opinion, Kendry isn’t being properly advised,” Célico said.

“He has the talent. Technically, he’s very good and has excellent vision. He’s a player who’s going to break out because he has so much talent.”

Célico believes Páez progressed too quickly without completing important stages of his development.

“It was a mistake to skip steps with him,” he added. “That means skipping stages you should complete in your development.”

Despite his recent difficulties, Célico remains convinced the Chelsea youngster possesses enough talent to eventually turn his career around.

Páez now faces several important months at Chelsea before the transfer market reopens in January.

With no immediate route into Alonso’s senior squad established, performing consistently for the U21s and avoiding further distractions will be crucial to rebuilding momentum.

Chelsea will then have another opportunity to find a suitable loan in January. After disappointing experiences in France and Argentina, choosing the right club and environment could be more important than simply finding Páez first-team minutes.
