Newcastle could offer Karim Benzema intriguing European route amid complicated Saudi agreement

Newcastle United could potentially emerge as an intriguing option for Karim Benzema if the veteran striker decides he wants to return to European football.

The 39-year-old is currently without a club after leaving Al-Hilal, but his situation is considerably more complicated than that of a conventional free agent.

Benzema remains tied to Saudi Arabia through a lucrative ambassadorial agreement involving the Public Investment Fund, and that could severely restrict his options outside the Saudi Pro League.

Former club Lyon investigated the possibility of bringing Benzema back during the summer transfer window.

Sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean confirmed contact was made through an intermediary but said the financial and contractual circumstances made progressing with a deal impossible.

“It is true that there was contact with an intermediary this summer regarding Karim,” Louis-Jean said.

“It was impossible because of Karim’s contractual situation.”

According to the report, Benzema's ambassadorial agreement runs until 2030 and is worth tens of millions of euros annually.

To retain those benefits, his apparent options are to retire or continue playing in Saudi Arabia. Moving elsewhere could invalidate the agreement, creating an enormous financial obstacle to a European return.

This is where Newcastle's ownership creates an interesting hypothetical possibility.

There is currently no suggestion Newcastle are negotiating with Benzema, and there is no indication his existing agreement contains any special exemption allowing him to join the Magpies.

However, Newcastle are majority-owned by Saudi Arabia's PIF, the same organisation involved in Benzema's wider Saudi agreement.

That connection could theoretically give the parties greater flexibility if Benzema wanted to return to European football.

A completely new arrangement would likely be required, but Newcastle could potentially allow Benzema to play in the Premier League while maintaining some involvement with Saudi Arabia's wider promotional interests.

For now, it remains a possibility rather than an active transfer story. What Lyon's failed attempt demonstrates, though, is that Benzema's next move cannot be treated like that of an ordinary free agent.

Everything depends on what Benzema wants to do next and how PIF views the remaining years of his agreement.

A move to another Saudi Pro League club would appear to be the most straightforward option if he intends to continue playing while preserving the existing financial arrangement.

A European return is considerably more complicated. Lyon have already discovered that simply signing Benzema as a free agent is not realistic under the current structure.

Newcastle therefore become interesting because of their PIF connection, but any move would seemingly require significant contractual restructuring rather than a standard free transfer.

Unless that happens, Benzema's future appears likely to remain closely connected to Saudi Arabia.
