Manchester United enter Jorge Salinas race as Barcelona face transfer problem

Manchester United have joined the race to sign highly-rated Racing Santander left-back Jorge Salinas, handing Barcelona fresh competition for one of Spain's brightest young defenders.

The 19-year-old has emerged as a target for several European clubs after an impressive breakthrough, with Manchester United now identifying him as an alternative to Newcastle United full-back Lewis Hall.

However, Barcelona remain firmly in the picture despite an ongoing disagreement with Racing Santander over the player's valuation.

According to reports in Spain, Racing Santander will only sanction Salinas' departure if his €16 million release clause is activated.

Manchester United are understood to have no issue meeting that figure, unlike Barcelona, who are exploring ways to negotiate a lower fee or structure an alternative agreement.

The Red Devils have joined Atlético Madrid, Newcastle United and FC Porto in expressing interest, with the race for the Spain Under-19 international continuing to gather pace.

Despite growing Premier League interest, Salinas is reportedly prioritising a move to Camp Nou.

The youngster believes Hansi Flick's commitment to developing young players makes Barcelona the ideal club for his next step, and he is currently waiting to see whether the Catalan giants can reach an agreement with Racing Santander.

Barcelona, however, remain unwilling to trigger the defender's release clause, creating an opportunity for Manchester United and other interested clubs to act.

Barcelona's reluctance to pay the full asking price could hand Manchester United a significant advantage if they decide to accelerate negotiations.

Financially, the Premier League club are well positioned to complete the transfer immediately, but persuading Salinas to choose Old Trafford over Camp Nou may prove a much greater challenge.

The defender is also keen to leave Racing Santander on good terms and is reportedly determined to avoid creating tension between himself and his current club.

Barcelona will continue attempting to negotiate a lower fee, while Manchester United monitor developments closely.
