Aston Villa boost as pundit questions who would reject Unai Emery’s project for João Palhinha

Aston Villa's pursuit of João Palhinha could yet prove decisive, with Benfica reportedly left hoping Unai Emery's side never formalise their interest in the Bayern Munich midfielder.

The Portugal international has been linked with both clubs throughout the summer, but Villa's financial strength is viewed as a significant obstacle for the Lisbon giants.

Speaking on CMTV's Mercado Now, Portuguese journalist Paulo Catarro admitted Benfica would struggle to compete if Aston Villa submit a serious offer.

"Aston Villa aren't just any club. We're talking about one of the top clubs in the Premier League."

Catarro believes Villa's sporting project and financial power would make them extremely difficult to reject.

He added: "If Palhinha is going to turn them down, he also needs to have good reasons. Who turns down a potential offer from a club like Aston Villa?"

The journalist also pointed out that Villa would comfortably outmatch Benfica financially.

"Aston Villa can always pay more than Benfica in terms of wages."

Benfica remain interested in bringing Palhinha back to Portugal but are unable to meet Bayern Munich's current valuation.

Instead, the Portuguese club are hoping time works in their favour, with the expectation that Bayern may eventually lower their demands before the transfer window closes.

Catarro admitted Benfica have little choice.

"Benfica can't do anything other than wait and hope the price comes down. Otherwise, they simply can't get João Palhinha."

Although Villa have been heavily linked with the former Fulham midfielder, no formal agreement has yet been reached with Bayern Munich.

Catarro questioned whether that could become an issue, noting that Premier League clubs usually complete their business before the season begins.

"It also depends on what sort of offer Aston Villa might eventually want to make," he explained.

"English clubs normally do these things quickly and before the official season starts."

With the Community Shield and Premier League kick-off approaching, the coming days could prove crucial.

While Aston Villa's sporting project is viewed as highly attractive, Benfica still have one important factor working in their favour.

Palhinha is understood to be keen on returning to Portugal to be closer to his children, something Catarro believes could carry significant weight when the midfielder decides his future.

However, he also warned that simply waiting for Benfica carries risks.

Should Bayern fail to receive an acceptable offer, the Bundesliga champions could keep the midfielder despite making it clear he is not central to their long-term plans.

Aston Villa are not the only Premier League club keeping tabs on Palhinha.

Newcastle United have also been credited with interest as they continue searching for midfield reinforcements following Bruno Guimarães' departure.

For now, though, Benfica's hopes appear to rest on one outcome: Aston Villa deciding not to press ahead with a concrete offer.
