Aston Villa Palhinha deal hits major roadblock after Bayern talks

Aston Villa's pursuit of Joao Palhinha has suffered a major setback after Bayern Munich director Max Eberl publicly insisted the two clubs will not reach an agreement.

Villa have held talks with Bayern over the 31-year-old midfielder as they look to strengthen their options, but Eberl has now taken an unusually firm stance over the negotiations.

The Bayern chief confirmed Aston Villa's approach before declaring there is "no chance of an agreement" under the current circumstances.

Palhinha's future has been uncertain since returning to Bayern following his loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur last season.

Spurs had the opportunity to keep the Portugal international permanently but decided against activating their option, sending him back to Munich.

With Vincent Kompany not considering Palhinha part of his plans, Bayern have been looking for another solution this summer.

Aston Villa subsequently emerged as an option.

Villa director of football Damia Vidagany previously confirmed discussions had taken place, with the two clubs speaking about Palhinha around their pre-season friendly last weekend.

Eberl has now confirmed that approach himself.

"You've read that Aston Villa contacted us regarding Joao. That is true, but we won't reach an agreement with Aston Villa."

Despite Bayern being prepared to move Palhinha on, Eberl made clear that the German champions will not simply accept the conditions being proposed by interested clubs.

The Bayern director insisted they are under no pressure to compromise on their demands simply to secure the midfielder's departure.

"It simply won't work. We aren't in a position where we have to do everything others try to impose on us."

When subsequently asked whether there was genuinely no realistic prospect of the two clubs finding common ground, Eberl was even more emphatic.

"No chance of an agreement."

Those comments represent a significant change in tone after the recent discussions between the clubs and suggest there remains a substantial difference over the structure or financial terms of a deal.

Eberl's comments could effectively end Aston Villa's pursuit, but the circumstances leave some room for interpretation.

Bayern are actively looking for a solution for a player who does not feature prominently in Kompany's plans, while Villa have already demonstrated enough interest to enter discussions.

That creates the possibility that Eberl's public stance is designed to strengthen Bayern's negotiating position, particularly if Villa have been pushing for terms the Bundesliga champions consider unacceptable.

There is no confirmation, however, that this is a negotiating tactic.

For now, Bayern's official message could hardly be clearer: they do not expect Palhinha to join Aston Villa under the terms currently being discussed.

The pressure is now on Aston Villa to decide whether to change their approach or walk away from Palhinha entirely.

Bayern's public position leaves little room for progress unless the conditions of the proposed transfer change significantly. Villa could return with a structure more acceptable to the German champions, but Eberl's emphatic comments suggest that a breakthrough is currently a long way off.

Attention will now turn to Villa's response and whether they continue pursuing Palhinha or move on to another midfield target before the deadline.
