Nico Elvedi edges closer to Leeds as €10m price opens door

Leeds United can reportedly complete a deal for Nico Elvedi for €10 million, with the Borussia Mönchengladbach defender already reaching a verbal agreement over a move to Elland Road.

Leeds have yet to submit their formal bid, but the conditions for a transfer are becoming increasingly clear. Gladbach are prepared to sanction Elvedi's departure at the right price, while the Switzerland international has already indicated he wants the move.

According to BILD, Leeds' pursuit of Elvedi is now "gaining new momentum" following the breakthrough over personal terms.

The 29-year-old has verbally agreed a contract with Leeds, leaving the clubs to negotiate the transfer fee.

Gladbach sporting executive Rouven Schröder has not yet received a concrete proposal from Leeds, but the Bundesliga club are reportedly willing to do business from €10m.

Elvedi's contract expires in 2027, putting Gladbach in a difficult position. Without an extension, this summer represents their final major opportunity to collect a transfer fee rather than risk losing him for nothing next year.

A departure would be a disappointment for Gladbach after they made a concerted effort to convince Elvedi that he remained central to their plans.

Manager Eugen Polanski appointed him vice-captain during the club's recent training camp, a move intended to demonstrate his importance and encourage him to sign a new contract.

"Nico is an absolute leader on the pitch – and he is with us. Naturally, we hope it stays that way."

Defensive teammate Kevin Diks also publicly expressed his desire for Elvedi to remain.

"I love Nico. Of course, I'm aware of the rumours that he might leave, but if I could wish for anything, it would be for him to stay with us."

Those efforts have not prevented the defender from moving towards an agreement with Leeds.

There is still one important piece of the transfer puzzle to fall into place.

Sebastiaan Bornauw is wanted by Hamburg, and his departure would create the space Leeds need to bring Elvedi into Daniel Farke's squad.

The German club have been working on a deal for Bornauw, and Leeds are expected to accelerate their move for Elvedi if that exit is completed.

That would effectively make the situation a one-in, one-out operation in central defence.

For Leeds, €10m represents an attainable price for an experienced international defender who already wants to join. The lack of an official offer means the transfer is not yet at the final stage, but the major pieces are increasingly falling into place.

Leeds' next step is expected to depend heavily on Bornauw. If his proposed move to Hamburg is completed, Farke's side would have room to proceed with an official offer for Elvedi.

With personal terms already verbally agreed and Gladbach prepared to negotiate from €10m, there appears to be a clear route towards completing the transfer. The key outstanding developments are Bornauw's exit and Leeds turning their interest into a formal bid.
