Chelsea loanee Jesse Derry scores first Sporting goal after dream debut

Chelsea loanee Jesse Derry continued his impressive start to life at Sporting CP by scoring his first goal at the Estádio José Alvalade during a 2-0 pre-season victory over Monaco.

The 19-year-old winger produced a composed finish beyond goalkeeper Philipp Köhn before admitting afterwards that the moment caught him completely by surprise.

Derry found the net in front of Sporting's home supporters for the first time since joining the Portuguese champions on loan from Chelsea.

Speaking to Sporting TV, with comments relayed by Record, the England Under-19 international described the occasion as a dream come true.

"Everyone dreams of playing in a stadium like this. It's a dream come true," Derry said.

"It's a great honour to play here in front of all these people, especially for such a big club as Sporting. I'm very honoured and proud to play for Sporting."

The teenager admitted he had not planned a goal celebration after opening his account for the club.

"It was fantastic to see the ball go into the net. The goalkeeper didn't even move. It was incredible to see the fans celebrating. I hope to score many more."

When asked what he was thinking after scoring, Derry revealed the occasion left him speechless.

"I genuinely didn't know what to do. I just looked at the stands. It was incredible."

Chelsea sanctioned Derry's season-long move to Sporting to ensure the winger gained regular senior football after progressing through the academy.

His early performances in pre-season suggest the move is already proving beneficial, with the youngster adapting quickly to life in Portugal.

Derry also believes Sporting are well prepared for the new campaign despite several new arrivals this summer.

"Yes, it's exciting. Not only for the fans, but for us as well. There are a lot of new players and that brings excitement for everyone."

"We're in the perfect position so close to the start of the season."

The winger praised his new teammates for helping him settle into the first-team environment.

"The players have been fantastic. It's difficult to come into a senior team at such a young age, but they've welcomed me incredibly well. It's been really good."

Derry ended his interview with a light-hearted message for Sporting supporters.

"Give me a month to speak Portuguese!" he laughed.

"Thank you for welcoming me. I hope to see you all soon."

The promising attacker will now be hoping his first goal at Alvalade is the beginning of a productive season before returning to Chelsea next summer.
