Alisson sees defensive progress as Jeremy Jacquet settles quickly at Liverpool

Alisson Becker believes Liverpool are becoming better at adapting to difficult situations after Andoni Iraola’s side secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bournemouth.

Alexander Isak scored the only goal at the Vitality Stadium, but Liverpool’s defensive performance was equally important. The Reds kept their third consecutive Premier League clean sheet, with summer signing Jeremy Jacquet again impressing alongside Virgil van Dijk.

For Alisson, winning without producing Liverpool’s best football is another encouraging sign of the team’s development under Iraola.

Liverpool struggled with Bournemouth’s intensity during the opening stages before gradually gaining control and improving after half-time.

Alisson believes that ability to adjust within matches is becoming an important strength.

“It wasn’t the cleanest performance we’ve had, but those games if you don’t play so well and you still win it with a clean sheet, it gives confidence,” he said.

Liverpool have already demonstrated resilience this season by recovering from deficits against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, while they also came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

The goalkeeper nevertheless acknowledged there remains plenty to improve, both in and out of possession.

Jacquet made only his fifth Premier League appearance since arriving from Rennes in a deal potentially worth £60m, but the young defender produced another assured display.

Alisson praised the entire defensive unit, including Van Dijk, Ronald Araujo and Milos Kerkez, while highlighting Jacquet’s quality.

“Jeremy played really well,” Alisson told LFC TV.

The Brazilian joked that playing alongside Van Dijk is “not the hardest job in the world”, pointing towards the Liverpool captain’s influence in helping Jacquet settle.

Araujo has also added greater defensive strength since arriving, and Liverpool’s three successive league clean sheets suggest their revamped back line is beginning to develop cohesion.

Alisson still had his own part to play at Bournemouth, making an important low save from Evanilson during the first half.

With chances at a premium, that intervention helped ensure Isak’s second-half goal was enough to secure all three points.

Liverpool enter the international break with another victory and increasing defensive stability under Iraola.

The next stage is finding greater consistency with the ball while maintaining a defensive structure that has now gone three consecutive league matches without conceding.
