AC Milan are reportedly moving closer towards signing Jean-Philippe Mateta from Crystal Palace after reviving negotiations that collapsed during the January transfer window.

According to Corriere dello Sport, discussions surrounding the striker are now at a “very advanced stage” as Milan attempt to strengthen their attacking options ahead of next season.

The Rossoneri came close to signing Mateta earlier this year before concerns regarding the forward’s knee condition disrupted negotiations. Milan eventually switched focus and brought in Niclas Füllkrug from West Ham United instead.

That move has not delivered the expected impact.

AC Milan returning strongly for Jean-Philippe Mateta

Füllkrug’s struggles in Serie A have reportedly convinced Milan to revisit the Mateta deal aggressively this summer.

The German striker has managed only one league goal and is increasingly expected to return to England after failing to secure a consistent role under Massimiliano Allegri.

That has reopened the door for Mateta, whose physical condition is now believed to have reassured Milan officials following earlier concerns.

Having followed Crystal Palace’s attacking development closely this season, Mateta’s importance under Oliver Glasnerhas remained obvious despite the setbacks he experienced earlier in the year. His combination of physical presence, movement and finishing continues to make him one of Palace’s most influential attacking players.

Corriere dello Sport claim Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani has personally pushed to revive the operation while attempting to take advantage of the striker’s contract situation, with Mateta currently tied to Palace until 2027.

The report also suggests his valuation has fallen slightly since January, improving Milan’s chances of reaching an agreement.

January collapse still influencing situation

Mateta himself recently admitted the failed January transfer deeply affected him emotionally before he fought back to regain full fitness.

“Frankly, it was a real blow at the time, when they told me it was over.” — Jean-Philippe Mateta

“I worked incredibly hard to show the coach that the leader, ‘JP,’ was there to reclaim his place and win with the team.” — Jean-Philippe Mateta

Those comments have naturally fuelled speculation that the Frenchman may remain open to completing the move this summer if Milan return with serious intent.

However, uncertainty surrounding Milan’s internal structure may still complicate matters.
The Italian club continue facing major political instability behind the scenes, with questions remaining around Allegri’s future and the position of sporting director Igli Tare. Corriere dello Sport themselves suggest further executive changes may arrive within weeks.

What’s next?

Milan are expected to continue advancing negotiations while evaluating wider squad restructuring plans ahead of the summer window.

Crystal Palace’s stance may depend heavily on replacement options and whether Glasner remains at the club long term. Milan, meanwhile, appear eager to move quickly before competition for Mateta intensifies again.

Still, the instability surrounding Milan’s sporting leadership means caution remains necessary until formal agreements begin to emerge.

Would Jean-Philippe Mateta thrive in Serie A, or should Crystal Palace fight to keep one of their most important attacking players?
