Liverpool have reportedly decided against activating their buy-back clause for Jarrel Quansah this summer despite ongoing defensive concerns at Anfield.

The defender joined Bayer Leverkusen in a €35m deal last year, with Liverpool securing buy-back options for both 2026 and 2027 as part of the agreement.

However, reports in Germany now claim the Reds are prepared to let the first clause expire and instead focus on potentially re-signing Quansah next summer for a significantly lower fee.

Liverpool choosing patience with Jarrel Quansah

According to reports from Germany, Liverpool would have needed to pay €80m to trigger the 2026 return clause.

Instead, the club are expected to leave Quansah at Bayer Leverkusen for another season before potentially bringing him back in 2027 for around €60m.

That strategy would allow the 23-year-old to continue developing as a defensive leader in Germany while also reducing the financial burden of a quick return.

Having followed Liverpool’s long-term squad planning under Arne Slot, the club increasingly appear focused on staggered development pathways rather than immediate emotional buy-backs. Quansah’s situation fits that thinking closely.

Liverpool still assessing defensive future

Despite a difficult season defensively, Liverpool already possess several centre-back options heading into next season.

Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni are all expected to remain involved, while Jérémy Jacquet is also set to arrive this summer.

However, uncertainty still surrounds parts of that group.

Leoni continues recovering from a long-term injury, while new contracts for Van Dijk and Konaté have not yet been finalised.

That naturally leaves open the possibility that Quansah could eventually return to Anfield as part of Liverpool’s next defensive cycle.

However, it remains too early to know whether Bayer Leverkusen’s own ambitions or Quansah’s development over the next year could eventually complicate Liverpool’s long-term plan.
