Harvey Elliott has revealed Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili played a role in convincing him to join Valencia after completing a Deadline Day loan move to Spain.

The 23-year-old had several options after returning to Liverpool following a difficult loan spell with Aston Villa last season, but made it clear that Valencia was his preferred destination.

That stance proved significant because other clubs were reportedly prepared to cover Elliott's entire salary, while Valencia are only paying part of his wages.

Mamardashvili backed Valencia move

Elliott spoke with Mamardashvili about life at Mestalla before making his decision.

The Georgian goalkeeper spent four years with Valencia before moving to Liverpool in 2025 and gave his teammate a glowing assessment of both the club and its supporters.

“Giorgi told me the fans are incredible,” Elliott told Valencia's official channels. “When things aren't going well, they support you and are with you until the end.”

Elliott deliberately avoided asking too many questions because he did not want to reveal that negotiations were taking place, but Mamardashvili's recommendation strengthened his interest.

“Giorgi spoke very highly of the city and, above all, of the club,” he added. “I'm very excited and eager to experience it for myself.”

Corberán talks convinced Elliott

Valencia manager Carlos Corberán was another major influence.

The pair held direct talks before the transfer, with Corberán explaining exactly what he expects from Elliott during his season in Spain.

“We talked at length about what he expected of me,” Elliott explained. “I think we're going to have a very good relationship.”

The move provides Elliott with another opportunity to secure the regular football that proved difficult to find during his Aston Villa loan.

Having also returned to Liverpool without a prominent role under Andoni Iraola, the midfielder will now attempt to establish himself as an important player at Mestalla.

Key Points

  • Harvey Elliott has completed a Deadline Day loan move to Valencia.
  • Giorgi Mamardashvili recommended his former club to the Liverpool midfielder.
  • Elliott chose Valencia despite Liverpool reportedly receiving more financially attractive loan offers.
  • Valencia manager Carlos Corberán held direct talks with Elliott before the move.
  • The 23-year-old is seeking regular football after struggling for opportunities at Aston Villa and Liverpool.

What’s Next?

Elliott will now begin working under Corberán as he attempts to secure the consistent first-team role he was unable to find during last season's Villa loan.

A successful campaign at Mestalla could rebuild his momentum and strengthen his case for a bigger role when he eventually returns to Liverpool.
