Former Leeds United captain Gordon Strachan believes the club are no longer sleeping giants and has backed Daniel Farke's side to enjoy a "special season" following their impressive return to the Premier League.
Leeds currently sit seventh in the table with nine points, having suffered just one defeat this season against reigning champions Arsenal.
With Manchester United visiting Elland Road on Sunday, Strachan believes his former club are making significant progress towards re-establishing themselves among England's leading teams.
Strachan believes Leeds are ready for the next step
Strachan, who captained Leeds to the English league title, has been encouraged by the club's development under Farke and its ambitious plans to expand Elland Road.
Speaking to BOYLE Sports, the former Scotland international dismissed the suggestion that Leeds remain a sleeping giant.
"I don’t think Leeds are a sleeping giant anymore. Leeds is a massive one-club city with incredible support," Strachan said.
"With the new stadium expansion plans I’d say they certainly have the potential to re-establish themselves among the top clubs in English football."
Leeds secured Premier League promotion under Farke last season before comfortably retaining their top-flight status.
Their promising start to the new campaign has strengthened optimism, with the team losing only once in their opening fixtures.
Manchester United clash offers Leeds major opportunity
Strachan believes the connection between Farke's players and the Elland Road supporters has been central to Leeds' improvement.
"What impresses me about Daniel Farke's side is that the supporters recognize the team is giving everything on the pitch and they respond to that," he explained.
"This could be a really special season for Leeds and the future is looking bright there."
Sunday's meeting with Manchester United presents another opportunity to demonstrate that progress.
A victory over their historic rivals could move Leeds towards the Champions League places, depending on results elsewhere.
