Newcastle-linked Giorgio Scalvini signs new Atalanta contract until 2031

Newcastle United-linked defender Giorgio Scalvini has committed his long-term future to Atalanta after signing a new contract with the Serie A club.

The 22-year-old Italy international, who was linked with a potential move to Newcastle during the summer transfer window, has extended his agreement with Atalanta until 2031.

It represents a major show of faith in a player who has developed through the club's academy and already accumulated considerable first-team experience despite his young age.

Atalanta officially confirmed the extension ahead of Scalvini's involvement with Italy in their Nations League fixture against Turkey.

The defender first joined Atalanta's academy in the summer of 2015 and progressed through the youth system before establishing himself in the senior side.

Atalanta described Scalvini as a "son of Zingonia", referencing the club's renowned training centre and academy, while highlighting the values he has demonstrated throughout his development.

At only 22, Scalvini has already made 144 professional appearances for Atalanta.

His journey with the club also includes their historic European triumph in Dublin, strengthening a relationship that Atalanta have now ensured could continue for several more seasons.

The extension is particularly significant given the transfer speculation surrounding Scalvini.

Newcastle were among the clubs linked with the Italy international during the summer, but Atalanta have now placed themselves in a considerably stronger position regarding his future.

A contract running until 2031 removes any immediate pressure to consider a sale and would potentially strengthen Atalanta's negotiating position should Newcastle or another interested club return.

For Scalvini, however, the immediate focus remains with Atalanta and Italy as one of Serie A's most highly regarded young defenders commits the prime years of his career to his boyhood club.

Scalvini will now turn his attention to international duty with Italy before returning to Atalanta.

The extension does not necessarily end Newcastle's interest, but any future attempt to sign the defender has become significantly more complicated. With Scalvini secured until 2031, Atalanta can dictate the terms of any negotiations rather than facing pressure to sell.

For Newcastle, that could mean either paying a substantial premium or turning towards alternative defensive targets.
