Chelsea signing Geovany Quenda has delivered an emotional farewell to Sporting CP, admitting he struggled to sleep while preparing to leave the club that shaped both him and his family.

The 19-year-old winger is set to arrive at Stamford Bridge this summer after Chelsea agreed a deal worth more than €50m with Sporting last year.

The original agreement allowed Quenda to remain in Lisbon for one final season before completing the move to England, but his departure now appears to be hitting far harder emotionally than many expected.

Geovany Quenda opens up on painful Sporting goodbye

Speaking in an interview with Sporting TV, later relayed in Portugal, the winger admitted leaving the club has been deeply emotional.

“I had nights where I couldn’t sleep because it was very difficult for me to say goodbye to a club that helped me and my family so much.” — Geovany Quenda

Quenda repeatedly returned to Sporting’s importance in his life rather than focusing on the Chelsea transfer itself.

“The club will always stay in my heart. I have no way to thank Sporting enough for how they treated my parents and my family.” — Geovany Quenda

Reports from Portugal suggest the winger became visibly emotional several times during the interview and needed moments to compose himself.

Chelsea inheriting one of Portugal’s biggest talents

Quenda’s final season in Lisbon included major highs and setbacks.

The winger endured a significant injury layoff after fracturing his foot and completed part of his rehabilitation in London under Chelsea’s supervision before returning later in the campaign.

Despite those difficulties, Sporting continued trusting him heavily.

Quenda’s rise always carried special emotional weight internally because of how long he spent progressing through the academy structure. Players with that connection often leave a stronger impact culturally than statistics alone suggest.

Quenda hopes Sporting reunion happens one day

The winger also praised both Ruben Amorim and Rui Borges for their trust during difficult moments, particularly following his injury return.

He even ended his farewell by hinting he hopes to return someday.

“I will always carry Sporting in my heart. It’s not goodbye, it’s see you soon. I hope one day I can wear the Sporting shirt again.” — Geovany Quenda

Chelsea now prepare to integrate one of Portugal’s brightest young talents into their long-term project under Xabi Alonso.
