West Ham eye Gabriel Pereira as Copenhagen set £20m price

West Ham United are interested in FC Copenhagen defender Gabriel Pereira, with the Brazilian reportedly valued at around £20 million.

The 26-year-old centre-back has emerged as a possible target under West Ham’s new recruitment strategy. Journalist Pablo Oliveira reports that Pereira fits the profile being pursued by the Hammers, although there is no indication that a formal offer has been submitted.

Pereira has developed into one of FC Copenhagen’s most reliable defenders since moving to Denmark from Gil Vicente.

His progress has now attracted West Ham, who are assessing possible defensive additions ahead of the new season. The Danish champions reportedly value Pereira at €23.2 million, equivalent to around £20 million.

Any transfer would also benefit Gil Vicente. The Portuguese club are entitled to 10% of a future fee after negotiating a sell-on clause when Pereira left for Copenhagen.

West Ham are not the first English club to monitor him. Leicester City previously tracked the Brazilian while playing in the Premier League, but no transfer materialised.

Pereira was a regular as Copenhagen won another Danish league title last season, making 26 league appearances and starting 25 of them.

His defensive output also helps explain why he remains on the radar of Premier League clubs. Pereira averaged 5.9 ball recoveries, 3.9 clearances and 2.2 interceptions per league game, while completing 88% of his passes.

Those numbers point to a defender who combines physical defensive work with composure in possession.

Pereira also has valuable European experience. He was involved in Copenhagen’s run to the UEFA Conference League quarter-finals in 2024/25 before featuring regularly in the Champions League the following season.

The next question is whether West Ham consider Pereira strong enough to justify a £20 million investment.

At 26, he would arrive closer to his peak years than a typical development signing, but his experience in domestic title races and European competition could reduce some of the adaptation risk.

The reported interest also fits a recruitment strategy focused on identifying players outside the most expensive European markets. Pereira has continued to improve since Leicester’s previous interest and now appears better prepared for a possible move to England.

However, West Ham have not yet made an offer and it remains too early to suggest a transfer is close. Much will depend on how Pereira ranks against the other centre-backs being considered by the club.

West Ham must decide whether to turn their interest into a formal approach. Copenhagen’s reported £20 million valuation provides a clear indication of the level required to start serious negotiations.

The Hammers are likely to compare Pereira with other defensive targets before making that decision. If they choose to advance, Copenhagen’s valuation and Gil Vicente’s 10% sell-on clause will form part of the financial picture surrounding any potential deal.
