Everton are considering a summer move for Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone as David Moyes looks to strengthen his options behind Jordan Pickford.

According to GIVEMESPORT, the Toffees are among the clubs showing interest in the 33-year-old England international, who is open to leaving Wolves in search of more regular football.

Everton are preparing for the possible departure of current back-up goalkeeper Mark Travers, creating room for an experienced replacement at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton identify Johnstone as Pickford cover

Johnstone spent most of the 2025/26 season behind José Sá in the Wolves pecking order and is now looking for a fresh opportunity.

The former Crystal Palace goalkeeper has made only 27 appearances for Wolves since joining the club for £10 million in 2024.

A move to Everton would not offer him a guaranteed starting position. Pickford remains Moyes’ undisputed number one, but Johnstone would provide proven Premier League experience and reliable competition.

The goalkeeper also has four senior England caps, giving Everton an experienced option for cup matches and any periods when Pickford is unavailable.

No asking price has yet been reported.

Travers interest could trigger Everton move

Everton’s pursuit may depend on what happens with Travers.

The goalkeeper is expected to leave this summer and is reportedly attracting interest from newly promoted Coventry City and Championship side Wrexham.

If Travers departs, Everton would need another senior goalkeeper capable of immediately stepping into the squad.

Johnstone fits that profile. He knows the Premier League, has international experience and appears ready to consider a move away from Molineux after struggling for regular minutes.

Everton have already strengthened their midfield by signing Hayden Hackney and making Merlin Röhl’s loan move permanent. Attention is now turning towards other areas of Moyes’ squad.

Key points

  • Everton are considering a summer move for Sam Johnstone.
  • The Wolves goalkeeper is open to leaving in search of more playing time.
  • Johnstone would provide experienced cover for Jordan Pickford.
  • Mark Travers is expected to attract offers from Coventry and Wrexham.
  • No transfer fee has yet been reported for the 33-year-old.

What happens next?

Everton are likely to wait for greater clarity over Travers before accelerating their search for another goalkeeper.

Johnstone’s future at Wolves will also depend on the offers available to him. While a move to Everton would provide Premier League football, he would still arrive as Pickford’s back-up rather than a guaranteed starter.

Would Johnstone be the right experienced number two for Everton?
