Former Newcastle United defender Emil Krafth has announced his retirement from international football after 52 appearances for Sweden, but insists he is not ready to end his playing career.

The 32-year-old remains a free agent following his summer departure from Newcastle and will receive an emotional farewell after Sweden's Nations League match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on 14 November.

Krafth prepares for emotional Sweden farewell

The Swedish Football Association will honour Krafth alongside Emil Forsberg, Robin Olsen, Martin Olsson and Viktor Claesson at the Strawberry Arena.

Speaking to Sportbladet, Krafth admitted the occasion could remind him of his tearful departure from St James' Park after seven seasons.

"I can't promise that I won't cry," he admitted.

The defender believes younger players deserve their opportunity with Sweden while he continues pursuing club football.

"It feels like the right decision," Krafth said.

He also praised the national team's progress under new head coach Graham Potter.

Former Newcastle defender provides injury update

Krafth has been without a club since leaving Newcastle following a difficult period disrupted by knee problems.

The experienced right-back underwent surgery in February but has since returned to full training, working individually with fitness support.

"I'm as strong as an ox," he declared.

Despite ending his international career, Krafth remains determined to compete at a high level and is considering his next move.

Swedish and overseas clubs showing interest

Krafth confirmed that clubs in Sweden and abroad have approached him, including former side Östers IF.

"There's interest from both Swedish and international clubs," he explained.

The defender acknowledged contact with Öster but said the timing had not been right for a return.

As a free agent, he can negotiate outside the usual transfer windows, although any agreement must suit both his sporting ambitions and family circumstances.

No deal has been announced.
