Vítor Pereira praised Elliot Anderson after the midfielder’s dramatic late equaliser earned Nottingham Forest a valuable 1-1 draw against Newcastle United at the City Ground.

Anderson struck late against his former club to rescue a point for Forest after Harvey Barnes looked to have secured victory for Newcastle with his second-half opener.

The result extended Forest’s unbeaten Premier League run to eight matches and moved them closer to securing their top-flight status for another season.

But beyond the result, Anderson’s goal carried far greater emotional weight.

Pereira hails Anderson’s strength after personal tragedy

Forest head coach Pereira revealed Anderson had attended his mother’s funeral just days before the match, making his performance even more remarkable.

The midfielder’s mother, Helen, recently passed away, and Pereira admitted it was impossible to fully understand the emotions the player had carried into the game.

“It is difficult for me and I believe for everyone to understand what he is feeling inside. But I believe that he honoured his mother by going on the pitch and running until the last minute.”

The goal against his boyhood club added another layer of emotion to an already significant moment.

Anderson’s determination to keep pushing until the final whistle was a reflection of the mentality Pereira has repeatedly praised.

‘Top player, top character’

Pereira was full of admiration for the midfielder’s character as much as his ability.

“He is a very, very talented player. He has a strong, strong character.”

Having followed Forest’s recent run closely, Anderson’s influence in midfield has become increasingly important during their unbeaten stretch.

His technical quality, energy and ability to impact games in key moments have made him one of Forest’s standout performers this season.

That form is naturally drawing outside attention.

Forest face summer interest in Anderson

Since arriving from Newcastle in 2024, Anderson’s development has accelerated significantly, and questions around his long-term future are already beginning to emerge.

Pereira acknowledged his quality but made it clear Forest want to enjoy having him while they can.

“I know he deserves the top of the world. But he is our player and we need to enjoy him.”

The Forest manager also revealed there were signs before kick-off that Anderson was in the mood to deliver.

“In the warm-up, my assistants said to me: ‘Elliot is on fire today’. Every time he shot on goal, he scored.”

However, it remains too early to determine whether Forest will face formal approaches this summer.

Much may depend on how the club finish the season and their Premier League status.

What’s next?

Forest now wait on other results as they edge closer to mathematically securing survival, with West Ham United and Arsenal still able to shape the table around them.

For Anderson, the focus will now return to finishing the campaign strongly after a deeply emotional week. His late goal may prove significant in Forest’s season — and unforgettable on a personal level.

Was this Elliot Anderson’s most important goal in a Nottingham Forest shirt?
