Everton manager David Moyes believes his side could be performing even better had they not lost several players during the closing stages of the summer transfer window.
The Toffees sit seventh in the Premier League with 13 points from nine matches, despite concerns about their squad depth.
Speaking ahead of Friday's home match against Coventry City, Moyes reflected on the impact of Everton's summer departures.
Moyes frustrated by Everton's summer departures
Everton lost several players towards the end of the transfer window, including Iliman Ndiaye, Beto, Tim Iroegbunam and Nathan Patterson.
Adam Aznou also departed on loan, while Jack Grealish and Ainsley Maitland-Niles arrived late in the window.
The changes left Moyes concerned about the depth of his squad.
"I feel as though we could have been doing better had we not lost some players in the summer," Moyes explained.
The Scot believes Everton have generally competed well but could have achieved stronger results with additional options.
He also acknowledged that individual quality can make the difference against stronger opponents.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall pushing for England call-up
Moyes also praised midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, whose performances have strengthened his case for international recognition.
The 28-year-old is hoping to earn his first senior England call-up under Thomas Tuchel.
"He must certainly be knocking on the door," the Everton manager said.
However, competition for places in England's midfield remains strong.
Dewsbury-Hall has become an important part of Everton's attacking midfield, contributing to their encouraging start.
Everton targeting further Premier League progress
Everton have won three, drawn four and lost two of their opening nine Premier League matches.
Their seventh-place position provides a promising platform, although Moyes remains aware of the challenges created by limited squad depth.
A 1-0 victory at Newcastle United on Monday lifted Everton back into the top seven.
The manager will hope his side can maintain that momentum against Coventry.
