Tony Bloom addresses Danny Welbeck exit as Brighton continue striker search

Brighton & Hove Albion chairman Tony Bloom has admitted Danny Welbeck's departure to Chelsea leaves a significant void, while insisting the club remain confident in their young attacking options ahead of the new season.

Welbeck completed a controversial move to Stamford Bridge earlier this summer after Chelsea paid around £5 million to secure the experienced striker's signature. The transfer proved unpopular with many Brighton supporters, who were reluctant to see the club's top scorer leave.

Speaking to At The Races TV, Bloom praised the former England international's contribution during his six years at the Amex Stadium but backed Brighton's long-term planning.

"Everything is coming together. Danny is a big loss. He has been a brilliant player for the club over the last six years but we have got a lot of really good young forwards and we are confident for the season ahead and in Europe for the second time."

Welbeck's leadership and experience will be difficult to replace, particularly after finishing as Brighton's leading scorer last season.

Head coach Fabian Hurzeler echoed Bloom's comments, acknowledging supporters' disappointment while expressing confidence in Charalampos Kostoulas and Georginio to step up.

"I understand some of the supporters are frustrated because he was our top goalscorer. But we have two really good strikers with Georginio, with Kostoulas… We have big, big potential. It's also a great opportunity for these two."

Both youngsters are expected to receive greater first-team opportunities following Welbeck's departure.

Despite their confidence in the club's emerging forwards, Brighton are continuing to assess the transfer market for another striker.

FootballPlace understands Feyenoord forward Ayase Ueda is among the attacking options being explored by the Seagulls. However, no formal offer has been submitted at this stage, with Brighton still evaluating several targets before deciding whether to strengthen further before the transfer window closes.

The club's pursuit of another centre-forward suggests Hurzeler wants additional experience and competition despite the faith being placed in Brighton's younger attackers.

Brighton are expected to continue monitoring striker targets before the transfer window closes as they weigh up whether to add further experience to Hurzeler's squad. Ayase Ueda remains one of the players under consideration, although negotiations have yet to progress to the formal bid stage.
