Newcastle United captain Dan Burn has admitted he faces a battle to regain his starting place after recovering from an ankle injury, with manager Matthias Jaissle urging patience ahead of the Aston Villa clash.

The 34-year-old missed the beginning of the season and has only recently returned to competitive action, making a late substitute appearance during Newcastle's 4-1 defeat to Coventry City.

Despite calls from supporters for his return, Burn accepts that Sven Botman and Malick Thiaw have established themselves in central defence.

Burn accepts competition for Newcastle starting place

Speaking to Chronicle Live, Burn acknowledged that his captaincy does not guarantee an immediate return to Jaissle's starting XI.

"I've been working hard to get fit so I'm looking to get an opportunity at some point," Burn said.

"The lads who have been playing have been doing really well. So I will have to work hard to get back in."

Jaissle has been cautious with players returning from injury, using medical data to determine when they are ready for increased playing time.

The Newcastle manager suggested that Burn is unlikely to start against Aston Villa.

"For Dan it is most likely too short to get the starting position," Jaissle explained.

He added that Joelinton, who has been training for longer, could be ready for a starting role sooner.

Newcastle captain responds to Coventry defeat

Burn also addressed Newcastle's disappointing performance against Coventry, acknowledging the frustration among travelling supporters.

The England international understood why some fans booed following the heavy defeat but insisted the squad must respond quickly.

"Everybody is very disappointed, which you expect, and I understand frustration from fans when they have travelled all that distance," he said.

"As I say we are trying to put it right starting against Villa."

With Newcastle searching for improved results, Burn's leadership could remain valuable even while he works towards full match fitness.
