Liverpool could offer Curtis Jones new deal despite Inter Milan interest

Liverpool could still offer Curtis Jones a new contract this summer despite growing interest from Inter Milan and the midfielder's recent on-field disagreement with teammate Dominik Szoboszlai.

According to transfer journalist Ben Jacobs, Liverpool have not ruled out extending Jones' stay at Anfield if he remains beyond the current transfer window, even though the 24-year-old is attracting serious interest from Serie A.

The update comes after Jones was involved in a heated exchange with Szoboszlai following Liverpool's pre-season victory over Wrexham in New York, with Kostas Tsimikas and Jeremie Frimpong stepping in to calm the situation.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Jacobs revealed that Inter have already made three approaches for Jones, although Liverpool do not consider any of them to have been formal bids.

The latest proposal is understood to be worth around €35 million (£29 million), following previous offers of €25 million and €32 million.

Liverpool are reportedly holding out for at least €40 million, while some within the market believe the midfielder could command closer to €50 million given current transfer fees.

Jacobs also suggested Jones would be open to a move to the San Siro if the clubs can reach an agreement.

However, Liverpool are said to be frustrated that discussions have largely taken place through intermediaries rather than through direct negotiations with Inter.

Despite the ongoing speculation, Liverpool are not actively pushing Jones towards the exit.

With less than a year remaining on his current contract, the Reds are keen to avoid losing an academy graduate on a free transfer next summer.

Jacobs claims the club would be prepared to offer Jones a new deal if he remains at Anfield beyond the transfer deadline, although Inter are expected to return with another attempt before the window closes.

Jones' recent clash with Szoboszlai has drawn criticism from some observers.

Peterborough United owner Darragh MacAnthony questioned the midfielder's reaction following the pre-season friendly, suggesting his behaviour did not reflect the standards expected of an academy graduate.

The incident has added another layer of uncertainty to Jones' future, although it has not changed Liverpool's reported willingness to keep the midfielder if a suitable transfer offer fails to arrive.

Inter Milan are expected to decide whether to return with an improved offer before the transfer window closes. Liverpool must also resolve Jones' contract situation, with the midfielder entering the final year of his current deal and free to negotiate with overseas clubs from January if no extension is agreed.
