Tottenham Hotspur have made their position crystal clear in the Cristian Romero transfer saga: they won't let their World Cup-winning defender leave on the cheap. Amid growing interest from Atletico Madrid, Spurs are refusing to lower their £60m asking price for the 27-year-old centre-back.

Romero, a rock at the back during Spurs' Europa League-winning run last season, remains a vital part of Thomas Frank’s plans for 2025-26. Despite making just 18 Premier League appearances due to injury, his presence in the final six matches of their European campaign proved decisive.

Atletico Madrid Circle, But Spurs Unmoved

Atletico boss Diego Simeone is a long-time admirer of his fellow Argentine and has made no secret of his interest. But while Romero has previously said he dreams of a La Liga stint, Spurs are under no pressure to sell.

Tottenham believe Atletico simply can’t meet their price — and they’re not willing to entertain a discount deal.

“Romero is one of the best defenders in the world right now – we won’t sell unless our valuation is met,” said a Tottenham source. — Club Insider

Romero Key to Spurs' Champions League Ambitions

New manager Thomas Frank knows that keeping Romero is vital. His pairing with Micky van de Ven has been the foundation of Spurs' defensive structure when both are fit.

Romero’s leadership, experience and ball-winning ability make him one of Europe’s most valuable defenders — and Spurs want their squad ready to challenge in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Analyst Verdict

Spurs know the market. Selling a World Cup-winning centre-back in his prime would be madness unless the price is right — and even then, finding a replacement of equal quality is no easy task. Expect Tottenham to stand their ground.

What’s Next?

Tottenham’s pre-season kicks off in mid-July. If Atletico want Romero, they’ll need to act fast — and with cash in hand. Spurs are in no mood to compromise.

What a defender! It is not easy to do business with Levy and co, so good luck to Atletico.
