Cristian Romero has launched a scathing response to Gary Neville following Argentina's World Cup semi-final victory over England, admitting the former Manchester United defender's criticism helped motivate both him and Lisandro Martinez.

Neville had questioned Argentina's centre-back partnership before the match, describing Romero and Martinez as "the best, worst centre-half pairing in the world" during an appearance on The Overlap. The comments reached the Argentina camp before kick-off and became extra motivation as Lionel Scaloni's side booked their place in another World Cup final.

Romero delivers blunt response

Speaking after Argentina's comeback victory, Romero made it clear Neville's remarks had not gone unnoticed.

"Lisandro and me, we were on fire before the game because of what Gary Neville said."

The Tottenham defender then took aim at the former England international's role as a pundit.

"I hope I'll not be like him when I retire. I will not criticise the players. The only thing that I hope for is that when I retire, I am not that stupid."

Romero added that every player is doing their best to represent their country, regardless of the outcome, and said reaching another World Cup final was a special achievement for Argentina.

Martinez echoes his teammate

Lisandro Martinez also addressed Neville's comments but struck a more measured tone.

The Manchester United defender insisted the squad are accustomed to outside criticism and prefer to answer their critics on the pitch rather than through words.

Argentina's defensive duo both played key roles in securing a place in Sunday's final, despite each picking up a booking during the victory over England.

Key Points

  • Cristian Romero criticised Gary Neville after Argentina's win over England.
  • Romero said Neville's comments motivated both him and Lisandro Martinez.
  • Neville had labelled the pair "the best, worst centre-half pairing in the world."
  • Martinez said Argentina prefer to respond through their performances.
  • Argentina will face Spain in the World Cup final.

What's next?

Argentina now have the opportunity to retain the World Cup when they meet Spain in Sunday's final. Scaloni's side are aiming to become the first nation in more than six decades to successfully defend the trophy, while Spain arrive full of confidence after eliminating France in the other semi-final.

Was Gary Neville's criticism fair, or did it simply give Argentina extra motivation ahead of the biggest game of their tournament?
